Gui Zhi Jia Shao Yao Sheng Jiang Ge Yi Liang Ren Shen San Liang Xin Jia Tang

Newly Modified Cinnamon Twig Decoction with 1 Liang more of Peony and Ginger and 3 Liang of Ginseng

Pattern: Pain due to Blood deficiency with lack of nourishment to muscles and joints

Key Symptoms: Generalised pain after promotion of sweating

Tongue: May have white coating but not always
Pulse: Sunken and slow


Ingredients

Gui Zhi 9g
Bai Shao 12g
Sheng Jiang 12g
Ren Shen 9g
Zhi Gan Cao 6g
Da Zao 9g


Preparation: Decoction.


Actions: Releases Wind-Cold from the muscle layer, regulates Ying and Wei, Tonifies Qi and Blood, Harmonises the Middle Jiao and stops spasms



Notes:
This has the longest name in the Shang Han Lun and is often shortened to just "Xin Jia Tang",

One liang is taken as 3g in modern sources but in Eastern Han times it was equivalent to 13.875g. This means that the dosages in classical formulae could have been more than 4x what is given today making them far higher than recommended safe dosages today but prompts consideration of what an effective dose may be (He, 2013).
